Provient de la tradition typographique de présentation des sommaires :

- *Les sommaires, à l'opposé des alinéas, font la première ligne

  pleine et renfoncent les lignes suivantes d'un cadratin (ou plus,
  suivant la justification), si le sommaire fait au moins trois
  lignes :
